Advanced Persistent Threats or APTs are complicated, costly, highly coordinated malware attacks capable of getting by today’s signature based defenses. Memory Lane: Peak into VALIS GROUP’s history as Island County Tourism Coordinator

I wIsland County Tourism Marketing Coordinator, from 2005 – 2010, Whidbey Island, WA.

I was the Tourism Marketing Coordinator, from 2005 – 2010 managing Branding, Marketing and Public Relations,  launching the new website, logo and slogan on behalf of Island County Tourism, headquartered in Coupeville, Whidbey Island, WA.

When I accepted this position, it brought into play my business development, technology, marketing, operations and environmental experience. The first challenge was to remove ‘Do Nothing Here” as the brand, redo the grey website and re-brand all marketing components to focus on highlighting the names of the two islands Whidbey and Camano Islands and on the cornucopia of things to do . All collateral materials, ads, and the website were redesigned www.WhidbeyCamanoIslands.com; I identified the new tagline and trademarked it to be “The Shortest Distance to Far Away”.

As the full-time Island County Tourism Marketing Coordinator, I achieved five successive years of increasing lodging and tax revenue gains.

Details of the job:

I was responsible for managing, creating and overseeing the implementation of a fully integrated, strategic branding communications plan and marketing campaign designed to promote overnight tourism to Whidbey and Camano Islands.  Duties included budget development, all advertising and promotional activities of the organization and ongoing collaboration with a 16 member Island County Joint Tourism Committee. I reported to, supported and provided strategic communications direction advice, counseled and reviewed progress with this team representing 3 city councils, lodging, six Chambers of Commerce and County government.

I took immediate actions to solve problems and provide new ideas for potential solutions. I managed the successful development and launch of a new website and Twitter site. As the Online Content/ Communications Specialist, I managed the content, design and daily maintenance of the website and daily online communications (i.e., daily internal email management, forwarding and responding to all requests from the website). I recommended improvements to the web user interface; provided support to editors with research, proofreading and visuals; photo and media library management; social media networking management and assisted interested parties with appropriate development of online profiles, stories and media.

I also monitored travel and tourism media on a daily basis; key web sites, blogs, and discussion forums related to destination travel. I delegated tasks to service contractors providing design, lead fulfillment and events calendar updates. I organized and provided itineraries, conducted site tours, hosted familiarization tours for writers and international groups and visiting groups of local, national or international media.

As the media communications/PR spokesperson to the media for Island County Joint Tourism Committee, I was responsible for drafting public relations and marketing materials including news releases, content for the Washington State Tourism newsletter, the tourism web site, media survey responses, and information for pitches to the media. I also drafted/edited and wrote various marketing communications content for promotional products including feature articles, brochures, web communications, presentations, and speeches.

In addition, I tracked media coverage; measured the results of the communications plans; exhibited at and attended tradeshows. I also managed the placement, graphic design and production of collateral materials (marketing materials such as guides), negotiated and managed media placement of print ads, TV, radio and video. Finally, I was a Board Member of WA State Destination Marketing Advisory Committee. WSDMO and I have advanced computer skills.
